Officers Kill Gunman Who Shot At Them From Washington Park Alley: Police

By Tanveer Ali | June 3, 2017 8:21am | Updated on June 9, 2017 11:45am

CHICAGO — Officers fatally shot Corsean Lewis, 17, who authorities say shot at a patrol car Friday night in Washington Park, police said.

A "summer mobile detail unit" was called to the 5800 block of South Wabash Avenue around 11:10 p.m. for reports of a man with a gun in the area.

The officers spotted and approached a group of men in an alley. One of the men fired a handgun shot at the patrol car. The officers shot back, striking the man who was transported to Stroger Hospital.

Lewis, of the 7400 block of South Wabash Avenue, was pronounced dead at 11:54 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

A gun was found at the scene.

The officers involved were placed on 30-day administrative duties.

The police-involved shooting is the second since the Chicago Police Department unveiled its new use of force police in May. Last month, police shot a man in an incident in Austin that also wounded two officers.

The department's use of force policy advises officers that their force must be objectively "reasonable" and "proportional," according to Supt. Eddie Johnson. Deadly force may be used when there is a threat of great bodily harm or death.
