LOGAN SQUARE — Part of a giant glass window plunged 12 stories from one of two large Logan Square towers at Milwaukee and California avenues.
No one was hurt in the mishap, which occurred at 8:15 a.m. May 15 at one of the MiCa towers, according to the towers' developer, Rob Buono of Henry Street Partners
It's unclear what caused the 3-by-7-foot window to shatter.
Buono blamed the crews who were working on the roof at the time. He said a safety harness being used by the crews likely swung and hit a window on the 12th floor (the top floor of the development), causing fragments of it to crash to the ground. The window frame remained in place, according to Buono.
Raymond Valadez, 1st Ward Ald. Joe Moreno's chief of staff, also pointed to an "exterior impact," possibly a bird. Buono's team did not find a dead bird nearby.
Buono, who said he's worked in development for years, called the incident "highly unusual."
"The general consensus is that it was a result of an impact," he said, adding that the incident "was promptly addressed."
When asked for photos of the window, Buono deferred to the window company, but declined to connect a DNAinfo reporter with the company.
The twin high-rise development at 2733 W. Belden Ave., sometimes referred to as the Twin Towers, is one of the most controversial project in the neighborhood.
During the years-long planning phase, the neighborhood was divided on the development, which includes two towers standing 11 and 12 stories tall offering more than 200 luxury apartments.
The development also is distinctive for its rows of giant windows.
When the development was built last year, it became the largest in Logan Square's history.
