CHICAGO — An 84-year-old man and an 81-year-old woman were robbed in their home Belmont Cragin home, the latest in a string of crimes targeting elderly people.

At 1:19 a.m. Saturday, a man climbed into the couple's home in the 5100 block of West Wellington Avenue through a back window, police said. The thief walked up to the 84-year-old man in the living room and said he had a gun.

The man and woman gave the thief a wallet, checkbook, $30 in cash and jewelry, police said. The thief ran away afterward.

No one was injured during the robbery, police said.

On Thursday night, an elderly couple was attacked and robbed in their Portage Park home. On May 19, a 78-year-old woman was badly beaten and robbed by a man while she cleaned her Irving Park home. Another attack occurred Tuesday night in th 4800 block of West Nelson Street, police said.

At an unrelated press conference Saturday, Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said investigators believe three of the four incidents are related. He said police had sent a special unit to patrol the area.

"We have some very good leads," Johnson said.

Activist Andrew Holmes is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of the attackers in those two incidents.

"Think about your grandmother and mother getting beaten while they're asleep," he said Friday. "They're defenseless. Attacking them is a punk coward move. It's wrong."
