IRVING PARK — A 78-year-old grandmother was badly beaten by a man who came into her Irving Park kitchen as she was cleaning Friday afternoon and robbed her.

At 1:13 p.m. Friday, the woman was inside a home in the 4100 block of North Avers Avenue when a man got in and he hit her "numerous" times in her head and face, police said. The woman was taken to St. Francis Hospital in critical condition.

Relatives of the woman told CBS2 the woman's nose was fractured and there was bleeding on her brain. The woman remained heavily sedated on Monday afternoon, said activist Andrew Holmes.

"We're just hoping that she will recover well and heal well," Holmes said, adding that the woman's family is devastated. "They're staying around their mom around the clock. [They're] totally upset by this incident."

The woman was in her kitchen, cleaning, when a man came to her back door and asked if there was an apartment for rent, according to NBC5. The woman thought the man was walking away, but he attacked her from behind.

The intruder told the woman not to look at him.

"They don't know what's going to happen with her. I don't know why they would have done this to our mother," the woman's daughter told CBS2.

FOX32 said the thief stole a wedding ring, a high school class ring from Puerto Rico with a pink stone, a necklace with a crucifix on it and dangling earrings.

Holmes asked that people let police know if they see anyone selling the jewelry.

"People on the street know each other and look out for each other, but there's no real safety anywhere, but I'm so heart sick about this,” neighbor Betsy Petersen told FOX32.

The attacker was described as Latino, tall, and he wore glasses and a red hat, police said.

Holmes said there is a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who attacked the woman. Anyone with information can call police or call 800-883-5587 to share their tip anonymously.

No one was in custody. Anyone with information was asked to call police at 312-744-8263.
