UPTOWN — A former teacher and principal will lead Truman College on an interim basis, the new leader of the City Colleges of Chicago announced Monday.

Shawn Jackson will lead the city college in Uptown, 1145 W. Wilson Ave., which focuses on teacher-training programs.

Jackson will join the City Colleges after serving as the chief officer of leadership and learning for the Chicago Public Schools, announced Chancellor Juan Salgado, whose first day as the head of the seven community colleges in Chicago was Monday.

The former principal of Spencer Technology Academy on the West Side, Jackson also worked as a science teacher.

"[Jackson's] deep education experience will bring robustness to Truman's focus on training the next generation of educators, and he himself serves as a role model in our effort to build a diverse pipeline of educators into Chicago classrooms," Salgado said in a statement.

Salgado, 48, replaced Cheryl Hyman who stepped down after six years.

A search is under way to find a permanent leader for Truman College, officials said. Jackson's appointment must be confirmed by the City Colleges Board of Trustees.
