WICKER PARK — On Thursday, Insomnia Cookies celebrates "420" day by offering fans six chocolate chunk cookies for $4.20, the shop announced on social media.
Insomnia's chocolate chunk cookies normally cost $1.60 each, or $3 for three.
An unofficial holiday known as "National Weed Day" on April 20, the origin is usually traced to an urban myth that "420" was a police code for a marijuana arrest, but a detailed report on Live Science published on Thursday claims the day originated from a group of pot smokers who called themselves "the Waldos."
In the 1970s, the Waldos gathered at 4:20 p.m. daily to search for an elusive marijuana patch which ended up being a wild goose chase, Live Science reports.
In addition to a Wicker Park location, 1537 N. Milwaukee Ave., Insomnia Cookies, which delivers warm cookies to doorsteps until 3 a.m., also operates shops in Lincoln Park, at 2260 N. Lincoln Ave., and Rogers Park, at 6470 N. Sheridan Ave.
