HYDE PARK — A University of Chicago student was forced to lie on the floor while three men robbed an apartment Wednesday afternoon, according to university police.

U. of C. police sent out a security alert Wednesday after two robberies.

In the first robbery a student heard a strange noise at noon in the kitchen of an apartment in the 5400 block of South Ellis Avenue. In the kitchen, the student found three men, including one armed with a handgun who ordered the student to lie on the floor while the three men robbed the apartment and escaped through the back door, according to university police.

The student was not harmed.

In the second robbery, a man was walking down the 6200 block of South Drexel Boulevard at 5:50 p.m. Wednesday when two people came up to him and demanded his cellphone, according to university police. He refused to give up the phone, and one of the two hit him and took the phone. The pair ran off to a waiting dark-colored car.

The Chicago Police Department is investigating both robberies.
