ALBANY PARK — Police are warning of an increase in scams that take advantage of people's instinct to help neighbors in need.

"Individuals are parking their vehicles, leaving the front hood raised, asking for money for gas or for tow service, claiming they forgot their wallet at home," Elias Voulgaris, commander of the Albany Park (17th) Police District, posted to social media

It's also the time of year when thieves are on the lookout for folks receiving tax refunds in the mail, said the commander, who knows from personal experience.

"If you do not receive your tax refund in a timely manner, check with the IRS on the status of your refund," Voulgaris said. "Two years ago someone stole my tax refund check and cashed it at a south suburban bank."
