AUBURN GRESHAM — Dyana Daniels couldn’t wait to try on her new Betsey Johnson designer shoes with 4-inch heels she planned to wear to her high school prom.

She had ordered the $127 shoes online from Macy's and was eagerly awaiting their arrival, only to discover that the package had been stolen right off her front steps in the 8300 block of South Sangamon Street.

“I felt violated because this was my package, and they had the nerve to come up on our property and take them,” Daniels said.

The 18-year-old student at Mother McAuley High School in Mount Greenwood said she found the perfect pair of heels to match her prom dress for the May 6 dance.

Her brother, Theo Daniels, had been tasked with the job of waiting at the house during the time the package could be delivered.

It came, but they never saw it.

“I never heard the doorbell ring, and later on I heard footsteps,” Theo Daniels said.

Theo said he didn’t see anyone outside and didn’t think much of it.

But a few days later a neighbor said she had found an empty package and asked if it was his. Apparently the thief had discarded the box in the neighbor's front yard, Theo said.

A neighbor’s security camera across the street captured someone grabbing the shoes off the family's front steps and running away. Daniels said the family filed a police report and made a complaint to the U.S. Postal Service, claiming no one knocked or rang the door bell before leaving the package.

A postal service representative didn't immediately respond to requests for comment.

This was the second time someone stole Daniels' shoes. Shoes she bought last year also went missing from her front steps. Those shoes also were ordered online.

Fortunately, Macy's sent her a free pair of the same shoes — the last one in her size — to wear to prom.

Daniels said she has no plans to order online again.
