HYDE PARK — A University of Chicago neurologist is selling his historic town house just off campus for $1.79 million.
Designed in 1904 by New York firm Mann, MacNeille and Lindeberg, the home at 5558 S. Kimbark Ave. has maintained much of its historic details.
For at least the last two decades, the building has housed professors at the University of Chicago and it’s easy to see why.
The five-bedroom home has a parking spot and other nice extras, like a wine cellar in the basement.
With 3,425 square feet over three stories, the home has space for a large living room centered around a craftsman-style fireplace. The wood-paneled dining room has leaded glass doors that open to the backyard.
There is a secret stairway leading to the upper floors, including the master bedroom on the third floor with its own fireplace, balcony and bathroom.
The home was last sold in 2006 for an estimated $1.6 million, based on transfer taxes recorded by the Cook County recorder of deeds.
