AVONDALE — It turns out the rooster crossed the road to get into Kirsten Andreson's garage.

The Avondale resident is hoping to find the owner of a stray rooster who wandered into her garage Tuesday night.

"I was pulling out of our garage, and all of a sudden there was a rooster," Andreson said.

After Andreson and her husband David chased the rooster from the garage in the 2900 block of North Lawndale Avenue, the feathered trespasser returned to Andreson's yard and camped out there for the night.

Andreson added that the all-black rooster — whom they've nicknamed "Pete" — appears to be limping and was still in her yard Wednesday afternoon.

Luckily, he didn't crow in the morning, and Andreson's three children are big fans of their new animal pal.

"I asked my little boy what he was going to dream about last night, and he said, 'The rooster,'" Andreson said. "The toddlers just think this is hilarious."

Andreson's husband asked neighbors for information and even knocked on doors, searching for the rooster's owner.

"People either didn't answer the door or looked at him like he was crazy," Andreson said. "It's not really a question people expect to be asked."

Andreson and her husband researched what to feed a rooster and tossed it some croutons, lettuce and carrots.

"We just have no clue what to do," she said with a laugh.

The family will continue to keep an eye on Pete until its owner comes forward and hope to help it find its way home.

Otherwise, "I've been trying to talk my wife into getting a family dog for some time now," said Dave Andreson. "Maybe Pete's the answer."
