WASHINGTON PARK — Washington Park is adapting the same sort of community-wide organizing drive that has been happening in Woodlawn.

The neighborhood will have its first Washington Park Summit at 9 a.m. Saturday at Burke Elementary School, 5356 S. King Drive.

Woodlawn has had similar efforts for nearly a decade now and held its eighth annual summit on March 18.

It’s a chance for all residents in the community to come together and talk about where they need to focus energy and resources and what capacity there is in the neighborhood already to make it better.

The Woodlawn Summit this year focused a lot of its time on the construction of Barack Obama’s presidential library and how to make sure the neighborhood would capture the benefits of the new institution for existing residents.

The Washington Park Summit is expected to also focus on the Obama library, as the two neighborhoods increasingly try to bind their interests together to capture increased attention on the South Side.

The event is free, but registration is encouraged on the event website.

A free breakfast and lunch will be included.
