OAKLAND — Oakwood Shores appears close to resuming construction, with 4th Ward Ald. Sophia King calling for a new round of planning meetings.

King will hold a community meeting on the development that has been replacing CHA’s Ida B. Wells, Clarence Darrow and Madden Park homes at 6 p.m. Wednesday at West Point Missionary Baptist Church, 3572 S. Cottage Grove Ave.

CHA spokesman Matt Aguilar said at the meeting that consultant Gensler will kick off "the master planning process for the remaining 40 acres of vacant land."

The site changed after CHA gave a portion of the land to Mariano’s in 2014 with the promise that the grocer would lure developers back who had been scared off by the housing market collapse.

The project started in 2003, but the CHA has completed only 524 of 3,000 planned units and hasn’t built anything on the site since completing the Oakwood Shores Terrace Apartments at 3755 S. Cottage Grove Ave. in 2013.

CHA said in its annual report to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that it plans to build 50 to 60 new mixed-income units in Oakwood Shores this year. According to the report, 17 units will be public housing.

For two years, activists have been calling for a plan for how Oakwood Shores would be finished.

A developer has not been identified by CHA.
