HUMBOLDT PARK — The sooner winter wraps up, the closer we are to hanging out at the Humboldt Park Beach, which can only be described as the neighborhood's summer paradise.

If you've found yourself wondering when to break out your swimsuit and towel, we've got you covered.

Along with Chicago's other outdoor swimming pools, the Humboldt Park Beach is slated to open in mid-to-late June, according to Jessica Maxey-Faulkner, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Park District. An exact opening date will be announced in the coming months.

The inland beach project was the first of its kind in Chicago, and maybe the country, according to a 1973 Tribune article detailing the dig.

In recent years, the beloved beach was at the center of controversy. The city closed the beach in 2015, saying it was too expensive to fill the swimming hole, which sparked protests among community leaders and residents. The beach reopened last summer to great fanfare.
