CHICAGO — St. Jerome Croatian Church wants to expand its school by two stories to add a gym and build more capacity for its preschool.

The Rev. Ivica Majstorović said the school, which serves children in prekindergarten through eighth grade, has an enrollment of about 180.

He said expansion would allow the school to increase its preschool enrollment. There are about 30 preschool children (ages 3 and 4), and Majstorović would like to have at least 50.

"Our school doesn't have the capacity for enough preschool children, and if you refuse people when they come to preschool, it's likely they won't come back" for elementary school, he said.

Majstorović also wants to build a gym.

The city's Zoning Board of Appeals board is scheduled on Friday to consider the application by St. Jerome, 2813 S. Princeton Ave., for the two-story addition. The meeting is set for 9 a.m. in Room 200 of City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle St.

The school was founded in 1922.
