CHICAGO — A 4-month-old baby has died because her mother was beaten while pregnant with the child, officials said.

Janylah Thomas, of the 3000 block of West Augusta Boulevard, died at 7:35 p.m. Thursday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Janylah's death was ruled a homicide by the Medical Examiner's Office, which said the baby died from complications due to her mother being assaulted while pregnant.

On Oct. 31, Janylah's mother was 34 weeks pregnant with the girl when she was injured during a domestic violence situation, according to a Department of Children and Family Services statement. Janylah was injured in utero. Her mother gave birth to her, but the girl died four months later as a result of those injuries, DCFS said.

The father of Janylah, 22-year-old Devon Thomas, is facing charges for the death of his 3-year-old son, Tayveon Thomas, also on Oct. 31. Prosecutors said Devon Thomas beat his son to death and choked his pregnant fiancee.

No charges have been announced in the death of Janylah.

Janylah's mother was being investigated for allegations of neglect in the death of Tayveon Thomas, DCFS said. DCFS was also investigating the death of Janylah.

A 1-year-old sibling of Thomas was taken into care after Tayveon Thomas' death, DCFS said.
