HYDE PARK — A four-bedroom town house designed by famed architect Harry Weese just went on the market in Hyde Park for $890,000.
Weese and I.M. Pei designed many of the town houses built in Hyde Park during urban renewal, but the red-brick clad town house is one of the noticeable deviations from the gray blocky town homes common around much of the neighborhood.
The home at 5519 S. Kimbark Ave. isn’t short on sharp corners both inside and out, but the original minimalist cabinetry and dark wood floors have been meticulously maintained.
Like all Hyde Park designs by Weese, who is best known for the 17th Church of Christ Scientist Downtown and his work on Washington, D.C., subway stations, the town house is one of many centered on a main courtyard and that also has a small private yard.
Unlike many of Weese’s other town houses, this one from 1966 comes with a garage and is one of the last in the line of Weese-designed town homes in Hyde Park.
The 3,200-square-foot town house has four bedrooms and 3½ bathrooms and an “in-law” unit in the basement with its own kitchenette and separate entrance.
