DOWNTOWN — Downtown's construction boom has been met with a rash of construction site burglaries.

Police reported three burglaries at three separate Downtown construction sites this month. In the crimes, the suspect or suspects use pry tools to break into construction site trailers and tool boxes and steal various items.

The crimes were reported:

• Between Feb. 3 and Feb. 6 in the 200 block of West Lake Street.

• Between Feb. 22 and Feb. 24 in the 200 block of West Lower Wacker Drive.

• Between Feb. 25 and Feb. 26 in the 200 block of South Wabash Avenue.

Developers are building a record number of apartments Downtown in addition to myriad office towers and other buildings.

Police declined to disclose which projects were burglarized, but construction is underway on a new 33-story apartment tower at 215 W. Lake St., and Willis Tower, 233 S. Wacker Drive, is beginning its $500 million renovation, including underground retail. Representatives of the two projects did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
