LOGAN SQUARE — A huge parcel of land in Logan Square will soon be up for grabs when the CVS pharmacy at 2053 N. Milwaukee Ave. closes next month.

News of the closure prompted Ald. Joe Moreno (1st) to introduce an ordinance in City Council on Wednesday that would down-zone the CVS site and surrounding parcels from a shopping district to a residential, single-unit district, according to legislation.

If it passes, the new zoning designation would apply to 2053-87 N. Milwaukee Ave. 2101-17 N. Maplewood Ave. and 2535-49 W. Charleston St.

According to Moreno's chief of staff, Raymond Valadez, the alderman wants to "ensure that he and the community will be given the opportunity to provide their input regarding the future disposition of this significant land parcel in the Logan Square neighborhood."

It's unclear whether Moreno supports a new development on the site or not. Valadez didn't answer further questions about the site. Typically, aldermen down-zone as a way to either reduce density or prevent large-scale developments from being built at all.

It's unclear why CVS is closing. A CVS employee deferred questions to the pharmacy's corporate office, which didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

There is a Walgreens pharmacy just a few minutes away from the CVS at 2001 N. Milwaukee Ave.
