NORTH CENTER — Officers shot and killed a woman who lunged at them with a knife, authorities said.

At 5:45 p.m. Friday, Chicago police officers responded to a report of a person with a knife in a store in the 3900 block of North Western Ave., police said. Various reports say the store was a CVS.

Police said they encountered a woman who was "disorderly and combative."

The woman left the store and "advanced toward the officers" while still armed with the knife, the statement said. She was struck twice with a Taser, but it had "no effect," police said.

"The female threatened the officers, then lunged toward the while still armed with a knife; as a result, the officers discharged their weapons, striking the offender in the upper body," the police statement said.

The woman, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as 55-year-old Michelle Robey of the 5600 block of North Spaulding Ave. in North Park, was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

A weapon was found at the scene, authorities said.

The officers at the scent were not injured.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating, and the officers involved will be placed on administrative duty for 30 days under police policy.

Police blocked traffic in the southbound lanes of Western Avenue from Irving Park Road to Montrose Avenue Friday evening.
