LOGAN SQUARE — When homes are torn down in Logan Square, new homes almost always follow, according to a new analysis.
Last year, Logan Square was among the top neighborhoods in the city where new construction permits outnumbered demolition permits in residential zoning districts, according to a recent Crain's report, which used data compiled by Steven Vance of Chicago Cityscape.
In 2016, the neighborhood saw 77 new construction permits and 63 demolition permits, according to the report.
Other neighborhoods that saw more new construction than demolition permits were North Center, Lincoln Park and West Town.
West Englewood is the only neighborhood where almost no new homes were built after teardowns. The neighborhood saw 119 demolition permits and just two new construction permits in 2016.
According to Crain's, the teardowns coincided with Mayor Rahm Emanuel's plan to demolish vacant buildings in high-crime police districts. Still, longtime resident and community leader Rashanah Baldwin told Crain's, "We don't want more vacant lots. We don't want our community to look like this."
