HYDE PARK — New wine shop 57th Street Wines is hosting its grand opening with a special tasting on Friday.

The store will showcase the selection of wines, beers and spirits curated by Derrick Westbrook, the former sommelier at Michelin-star restaurant Elizabeth, starting at 5 p.m. Friday at the store, 1448 E. 57th St.

57th Street Wines opened Dec. 9 and is now ready to really show off some of the very particular selections on the shelf — and there are some strange things on the shelves for adventurous drinkers.

“We’ve added more than 50 wines since we opened,” said owner Steven Lucy.

He said people will get a chance to try Mouton Noir’s Other People’s Pinot before it’s served for a special dinner service on Feb. 21 at the Promontory where 57th Street Wines will pair wines by African-American winemakers with the restaurant’s dishes.

Lucy said there will also be a Chardonnay and Gamay-style wines from the Serbian winery, Francuska Vinarija, which are difficult to find in the United States.

For people more interested in local fare, the shop will be sampling beers from the Hyde Parker brewers Burnt City Brewing and whiskeys from Chicago distiller Koval.

People must be 21 or older to try the samples and the store will also provide free food.
