OLD TOWN — Broken English Taco Pub has opened at 1400 N. Well St. in the former Pomp & Circumstance.
A joint venture of restaurateurs Adolfo Garcia, Phil Stefani and Carmen Rossi, it grows out of a previous location at 75 E. Lake St. that opened on Cinco de Mayo last year. That was a team concept between Garcia and Stefani, and Rossi joins in as the former owner of Pomp & Circumstance.
It opened for business in mid-December, with a patio added last weekend. An upstairs area is still being completed.
"We opened real quietly," said Steven Hartenstein, chief financial officer at Stefani Group. "We didn't do any hoopla."
Instead, the restaurant is planning a grand opening when it is finished.
According to Hartenstein, Garcia led the way on the concept, and it's named after the Mexico native's own "broken English."
The menu includes meat, fish and vegetarian tacos, all $7 or $8 for a pair. Garcia has previously said, "You can only charge so much for a hot dog, and it's the same with tacos." Margaritas, sangria and specialty drinks are available as well.
"We're really pleased," Hartenstein said. "We had just an unbelievable first couple weeks."
