LOGAN SQUARE — Ground Control, a cozy vegan restaurant that has called Armitage Avenue home since 2012, just got bigger.

At the end of last month, the owners of the restaurant, 3315 W. Armitage Ave., debuted an expanded dining area, which includes about 20 more seats, pinball machines and a space-themed mural by local artist Mac Blackout.

"We want to entice people to linger and not feel jammed up in the small space," said Dan Hanaway, who owns the restaurant with his wife, Carrie Haase.

The husband-and-wife team have owned the storefront next to Ground Control since they opened the restaurant in 2012. They were using it as an art gallery until they had enough time and money to build the restaurant, Hanaway said.

"I finally have a crew in place that allowed me to work on it," Hanaway said.

The stretch of Armitage Avenue where Ground Control is located has changed quite a bit since the restaurant first opened. A string of restaurants and small businesses including Sink Swim, Festive Collective, Damn Fine Coffee and Best Intentions have all joined the stretch.

Hanaway called it a "night and day" difference.

"It's insane," he said.

Ground Control's eclectic menu hasn't changed. The restaurant serves a variety of vegan dishes that span the globe like seitan jibaritos, tofu spring rolls and pasta.
