CHICAGO — Precious Land, a 27-year-old woman whose story was profiled in the New York Times, has died seven months after a Memorial Day weekend shooting left her paralyzed, officials said.

On May 28, the woman was found shot in her neck in the 3900 block of West Lexington Street, police said at the time. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition and was in a coma.

Land died at 9:24 p.m. Friday. Her autopsy revealed that she died of complications from a gunshot wound in a homicide, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Land's family, including her four children, hoped for months she would recover, bringing her home from the hospital and helping with her care. Land lost a brother, Anthony Jackson, to gun violence in 2014, according to a New York Times profile.

The family created a GoFundMe campaign which raised more than $40,000 to help Land, whom the Times described as a "homebody" with an "infectious laugh."

A doctor told the Times Land would die of her injury at some point, but the family hoped for a miracle.

"I'm like, 'H--- no. I am a fighter. My daughter's a fighter,'" Land's mother, Stacey Turner, told doctors when they asked if she wanted to remove Land from life support, according to the Times. "'And we're going to fight.'"

When Land died, Turner posted a message on GoFundMe so supporters would know what happened. Turner asked for prayers for Land, her children and herself.

"She fought long and hard as she can," Turner wrote. "I don't question God, but I will say this pain runs deep."
