CHICAGO — An off-duty Police sergeant shot a man who had fired shots at him and his friends, police said.
At 7:30 p.m., the sergeant was walking with friends in the 4500 block of North Kedzie Avenue when a dark-colored car pulled up and people inside instigated an argument, according to a Chicago Police news release.
The car's driver pulled into a parking lot and doubled back toward the sergeant, police said. Police originally said someone in the car brandished a gun and the sergeant took out his gun and fired shots at the car as the driver drove away.
Several hours later, police revised their statement and said someone in the car had fired shots at the sergeant. Police also said the sergeant had fired at the car when it was not moving, though the driver drove away afterward.
The sergeant and his friends were not wounded.
Shortly afterward, police learned that a man had taken himself to Swedish Covenant Hospital with a gunshot wound in his head, police said. Police originally said the man had been shot in his shoulder.
Officers thought the man might have been wounded in the Kedzie shooting, so they searched the parking lot and found a gun.
Police confirmed the hospitalized man's involvement in the Kedzie incident, police said.
The officer involved in the incident has been placed on administrative duties for 30 days while the Independent Police Review Authority investigates.
