COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A West Side woman was kidnapped, raped and robbed just minutes after dropping off her children at school early Monday, prosecutors said.

The 24-year-old victim was walking home about 8:45 a.m. when Dale Lewis, 48, drove up alongside her and asked if she had any change, Assistant State's Attorney Holly Grosshans said during a bond hearing Wednesday.

The victim said, "no," and continued to walk in the 5700 block of West Lake Street, according to prosecutors.

That's when Lewis jumped out of his car, grabbed the woman around her neck from behind and dragged her into his vehicle, Grosshans said.

The victim repeatedly struggled against Lewis and yelled for help as he raped and punched her, and tried to force the woman to perform oral sex, prosecutors said. Lewis is accused of stealing $160 from the woman before trying unsuccessfully to push her out of his car.

Meanwhile, prosecutors said, a witness flagged down a Chicago Police officer who'd been parked nearby.

Lewis tried to speed away as the officer approached, Grosshans said. At that point, according to prosecutors, the victim fell out of Lewis' car, which struck her as it pulled away.

Police were able to arrest Lewis at a nearby intersection; he had scratches on his face and $162 in his wallet, Grosshans said.

The victim was taken to West Suburban Hospital, where she was treated for a broken hand, broken foot, scratches on her face and neck, a black eye and a gash to her forehead, authorities said.

Lewis, of west suburban Westchester, is charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated criminal sexual assault.

Lewis has no prior criminal history.

According to his public defender, Lewis is a widower with a 13-year-old daughter; he works as a security officer.

Cook County Judge James Brown on Wednesday set bail at $500,000.
