COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — An Englewood man gunned down this summer was trying to break up a fight when he was killed, prosecutors said Thursday.

Angelo Davis, 36, was shot in his head June 9 and died June 16 due to complications from the wound, authorities said.

Charles Miller, 28, was charged this week with first-degree murder.

According to prosecutors, Miller and a friend drove to the 5300 block of South Princeton Avenue about 7:45 p.m. June 9 to visit the friend's ex-girlfriend's home.

When the friend and his ex-girlfriend began to argue, Davis, who is the woman's cousin, tried to "deescalate the situation and calm everybody down," Assistant State's Attorney Jullian Brevard said during a bond hearing Thursday.

Miller, who was still sitting in the passenger seat of his friend's car, told Davis to mind his own business, prosecutors said. The men began to argue.

That's when Miller tried to step out of the vehicle and Davis slammed the door shut, preventing Miller from moving, Brevard said. Miller pulled out a gun and shot Davis once in the face, according to prosecutors.

Miller's friend got back into the driver's seat of his car and sped off, authorities said.

Davis was rushed in grave condition to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 1:09 p.m. June 16, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Davis lived in the 6300 block of South Elizabeth Street.

A witness later identified Miller as the shooter, prosecutors said.

Cook County Judge Laura Sullivan on Thursday denied Miller bail.
