NORTH CENTER — Needles will be clacking at a pair of upcoming "knit-ins" scheduled as part of the Pussyhat Project, which is supplying handmade caps to people taking part in the upcoming Women's March on Washington.

Knit 1 is hosting the communal knitting events, 1-4 p.m., Jan. 8 and Jan. 15, 3856 N. Lincoln Ave.

Bring needles and pink yarn or purchase supplies at the shop. Expert knitters will be on hand to help those having difficulty with their hat.

The Pussyhat Project, conceived by a pair of Californians, is mustering an army of knitters in advance of the planned Women's March on Washington set for Jan. 21, the day after Donald Trump's inauguration.

The goal: Outfit every marcher with a vaguely cat ear-shaped bright pink handmade hat "to make a BIG unified statement ... creating a sea of pink," according to a description of the project.

The march itself is a response to an election cycle that "insulted, demonized and threatened many of us," and aims to "send a bold message to our new administration on their first day in office, and to the world, that women's rights are human rights," according to organizers' mission statement.

Knit 1 is collecting hats to distribute to people who plan to attend the march. To reserve a hat — one per person — marchers need to provide their name and phone number to the shop; the information can be emailed to info@knit1chicago.com.

Hats must be picked up in person. Any extra caps will be shipped to the Pussyhat Project organizers on Jan. 16.
