IRVING PARK — The boys basketball squad for DePaul College Prep  battled through six overtimes this week to beat Hinsdale Central in a holiday tournament.

The high school game, played Wednesday in west suburban Hinsdale, was the 14th-longest in state boys basketball history.

"Congratulations to our boys varsity squad on winning a 6-overtime thriller at the Hinsdale Central Holiday tournament against host school Hinsdale Central," the school posted on its website. "Senior guard Fred Nunez led all scorers with 24 points to help the Rams to a very exciting victory."

Nunez went to the free throw line 17 times, sinking 11 shots in the 64-62 win. Elliott Sieger logged 50 minutes to lead the DePaul team in time on the court. Matthew Tonkel had 15 rebounds in 46 minutes of play and tipped in the winning point on a buzzer-beater.

The Tribune noted that the two teams were sent into the fifth overtime when Jack Hoiberg, son of Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg, sunk a basket for Hinsdale Central. The young Hoiberg, in a career day, ended up playing 50 minutes while scoring 32 for Hinsdale Central.

According to the tournament website, the game featured 21 ties and 22 lead changes. DePaul (9-4) shot 38.5 percent.

On Thursday, DePaul lost to Homewood-Flossmoor in the tournament's championship semifinals. The Irving Park team is coached by Gordon Tech and DePaul University alum Tom Kleinschmidt.

At the start of the tournament, Kleinschmidt called Hinsdale Central "a tough out."

"We're going to have to bring it," he said.

The school, at 3633 N. California Ave., formerly was Gordon Tech; it was renamed DePaul College Prep in 2014 after it partnered with DePaul University.
