COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — An Austin man has been charged in the Oct. 3 shooting that killed one man and critically wounded another.

According to prosecutors, 26-year-old Jordan Scott has known both victims since high school.

All three men were hanging out in the victims' apartment in the 100 block of North Central Avenue when Scott got into a heated argument with 32-year-old Samuel Rockett about 3:30 a.m. Oct. 3, Assistant State's Attorney Jullian Brevard said during a bond hearing Wednesday.

Rockett's 26-year-old roommate, who had fallen asleep on a living-room couch, awoke to the sound of Scott demanding money from Rockett, prosecutors said. The voices carried from a nearby bedroom.

Rockett said something to the effect of "it didn't have to be that way" shortly before multiple shots rang out, Brevard said.

Moments later, Scott and an unknown accomplice walked into the living room, where Scott shot the 26-year-old multiple times in his hand, face and body, according to prosecutors. The victim spent two months in a coma. Details about his current condition weren't available Wednesday.

According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, Rockett died of a gunshot wound to his head.

Phone records place Scott at Rockett's home when he was killed, Brevard said.

Cook County Judge Donald Panarese Jr. on Wednesday ordered Scott, of the 5500 block of West Le Moyne Street, held in lieu of $1.5 million bail.

According to court records, Scott works as a waiter.
