HUMBOLDT PARK — Residents and activists in Humboldt Park and Logan Square are planning to march for public and affordable housing this weekend.
The fourth annual Las Posadas action for public and affordable housing is set for Saturday, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Those would like to participate should meet at Humboldt Park United Methodist Church, 2120 N. Mozart St., at 11 a.m. From there, the group will march down Milwaukee Avenue from the California Blue Line stop to the Logan Square Blue Line stop. The event will end with a kid-friendly festival and remarks from Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa (35th).
"Like the Holy Family, poor families in our community - public housing residents in particular - have been turned away time and time again from developments that might have offered them a home," a Facebook post for the event reads. "Meanwhile, the 525 public housing units that were lost at Lathrop Homes have still not been replaced."
The event is organized by the Logan Square Ecumenical Alliance, an association of congregations in Logan Square.
Las Posadas is a religious festival in Mexico that honors the journey that Joseph and Mary made to find Mary a safe place to give birth to baby Jesus. It's traditionally celebrated with a procession through the streets from Dec. 16 to Dec. 24.
