LAKEVIEW — Twenty-seven years in the making, Martin Scorsese's newest film, "Silence," will get an early screening at The Music Box Theatre before it is released nationwide.

The Lakeview theater, 3733 N. Southport Ave., will show the movie starting Jan. 6, with tickets for the opening weekend on sale at noon Wednesday. The film will debut in New York and Los Angeles Dec. 23 before extended releases Jan. 6 and 13.

The movie is based on a top-selling 1966 Japanese novel about Portuguese Jesuit priests searching for their lost mentor and spreading the word of their forbidden religion in 17th century Japan.

Starring Adam Driver, Andrew Garfield and Liam Neeson, "Silence" is "about the hard questions religion demands we ask ... the reasonableness of walking away from religion, and the ways in which faith defies that reasonableness," Uproxx critic Keith Phipps wrote.

"The silence of the title is God's and Scorsese has made a film about how we fill that silence," he added.

Scorsese first read "Silence" the novel in 1989 while in Japan for an acting gig and quickly bought the film rights. His pet project was shelved for decades while he made blockbuster flicks like "Goodfellas," "The Departed" and "The Wolf of Wall Street."

Music Box Theatre's current lineup ranges from holiday classics like "Elf" and "It's A Wonderful Life," to acclaimed foreign films like "Seasons," "The Handmaiden" and "The Brand New Testament."
