NORTH CENTER — A 62-year-old woman was critically injured after being struck by a car Sunday in North Center, according to police.

At around 10:18 a.m., a 25-year-old man was driving a 2010 Hyundai Elantra southbound in the 3400 block of North Western Avenue when he tried to stop at a red light but skidded into the intersection, police said.

To try to get out of the intersection, the man began backing up but struck the 62-year-old woman trying to cross eastbound on Western Avenue, police said.

She was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, police said.

The driver stayed at the scene and the incident is under investigation by the department's major accident's unit, police said.
