CHICAGO — That Cubs magic this season was something special: It even made manager Joe Maddon better-looking.

That's according to an annual ranking of Major League Baseball's "most handsome managers" by writer Craig Calcaterra of NBC Sports.

Last year, Maddon was ranked No. 10; this year he checks in at No. 5.

Calcaterra writes that his previous rankings kept Maddon out of the top five because "I felt like he was trying too hard to be the cool dad which, as a dad, I can tell you is never a great look."

But now, writes Calcaterra, "winning begets swagger, which begets handsomeness, and seeing Maddon walking around the Winter Meetings this week with a championship under his belt has allowed me to see him in a different light."

However, Maddon is "still trying too hard," opines Calcaterra.

(In talking about dress codes last year, Maddon spelled out his wardrobe choice: “If you think you look hot, you wear it.” He is also known to wear shirts with that slogan.)

Meanwhile, new White Sox skipper Rick Renteria comes in at 27 out of 30. Former manager Robin Ventura came in fifth in last season's poll.

SB Nation's South Side Sox writer Jim Margulus objects to Renteria's low score.
