BRIDGEPORT — The Eleanor Street Boathouse is finally here.

On Sunday, the Chicago Park District and 11th Ward Ald. Patrick D. Thompson will celebrate the boathouse’s official opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Neighborhood organizations like Recovery on Water — a program that teaches recovering breast cancer patients rowing for exercise and mutual support — are looking forward to walking through the doors of the much-anticipated facility.

The organization "is thrilled to soon call the Eleanor Boathouse home,” said Jenn Gibbons, its director. “We're thrilled to be able to offer exercise to anyone who walks through the door and look forward to working with the community so this boathouse is a thriving and accessible asset for our neighbors.”

The ribbon-cutting runs from 9-11 a.m. at Park 571, 2860 S. Eleanor St. The ribbon will be cut at 10 a.m.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel first announced plans to build the 19,000-square-foot, Jeanne Gang-designed boathouse in November 2015, in a bid to expand recreation in several neighborhoods near the Chicago River.

Three other boathouses had already been built in Clark Park, River Park and Chinatown, and the Bridgeport facility was the last in line.

The city broke ground on the Bridgeport boathouse in August.
