ROSCOE VILLAGE — The rumors of the demise of Hero's Submarine Sandwich Shop, fueled on Facebook, are slightly exaggerated and definitely premature, according to owners.

The property at 3600 N. Western Ave. is for sale, with an asking price of $1.6 million.

But no purchase is imminent, and the sub shop remains open for business for the foreseeable future until there's a buyer and the deal is finalized, Donna Bieniek, daughter of Hero's founders David and Daisy Arnoux told DNAinfo on Monday.

"We are selling, we are not closing," said Bieniek, one of several Arnoux siblings to work at the shop. "We're still open."

Worries over Hero's future began circulating on social media when the property listing went live, prompting a steady stream of emails, phone calls and visits from people saying, "I heard you were closed," Bieniek said.

"All they have to do is look" to see the shop is open, she said.

Hero's has been a fixture at the corner of Western and Addison since 1963. Over the decades, the shop earned a loyal following for its freshly made subs, particularly among Lane Tech students across the street.

But 53 years is a long time to prop up a family business, Bieniek said.

"We're tired," she said. "Working 365 days, 24/7 — we're done."
