CHICAGO — Officers helped save the life of a 19-year-old man after he was shot in Englewood this week, police said.

On Sunday night, Englewood District officers were called to a shooting in the 6900 block of South Emerald Avenue and saw the man had been hit in his left leg, according to a Chicago Police news release.

First-year officers John McGlynn and Mike Hughes worked together to apply a tourniquet to the man's leg, put pressure on the wound and help the man stay calm, police said.

The man was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

"The tourniquet successfully stopped the bleeding until the ambulance got there," Hughes said in a video with the Chicago Police Department.

Chicago Police have been getting combat medical kits that will help treat themselves or other people in emergency situations. Hughes said the kits, which come from the Chicago Police Foundation, helped save the 19-year-old, according to CBS2.

"Definitely something that all police officers should have out in the streets," Hughes told CBS2.

In Chicago Police video, McGlynn said the officers received training while they were in the Police Academy that helped them rescue the man.

"We received the training maybe fourth or fifth month of the academy, and then, actually even more recently, late October we received our medical kits from the Chicago Police Foundation, which included the tools that helped save this victim's life," McGlynn said.

McGlynn and Hughes went to the hospital, where the man's family said they were thankful the officers had used the tourniquet to save the victim's life, McGlynn said.
