HYDE PARK — One of the Museum of Science and Industry’s oldest collections is back on display: its extensive array of model ships.

The ships are now back on view to the public after being closed in June for conservation and while a host of new ships were added to the exhibit.

Since the museum, 5700 S. Lake Shore Drive, opened in 1933, it’s always displayed portions of its collection of model ships and sailing vessels, and the reopened gallery brings many out of storage while adding new ones to the exhibit of 43 models.

Fifteen new ships have been added to the exhibit, including 10 that were custom built for the museum. Models of high-tech racing yachts, modern fishing boats and other ships have been added to the exhibit.

The museum has contracted model builders and restoration experts to give popular models a once over while adding new custom-painted backdrops and dioramas.

The exhibit is included with the price of admission to the museum.

The ships gallery has expanded to include 43 models.
