CANARYVILLE — Ald. Patrick D. Thompson (11th) is hosting a community meeting to discuss a proposed zoning change at Kelly’s Tavern.

Set for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Taylor-Lauridsen Park, 704 W. 42nd St., the meeting is designed to gather feedback on the bar's request for the change.

Bill Babuskow, Kelly’s owner, wants to change the zoning on his property so he can apply to renew his patio license, allowing him to legally run a beer garden, according to Thompson.

When Babuskow bought Kelly's Tavern — zoned as a residential property — the bar had a valid patio license.

But the license recently lapsed, requiring the owner to request a zoning change to make the property commercial. To legally run a beer garden, the patio must be zoned as commercial, Thompson said.

Bakuskow discovered the oversight after a police officer ticketed a patron for drinking on the patio, Thompson said.

"He’s trying to reinstate the license," Thompson said. "This is my policy [to hold a public meeting]. For openness and transparency."
