WICKER PARK — When Furious Spoon served free bowls of ramen on its opening day, a frigid February night in 2015, lines of hungry hipsters stormed Milwaukee Avenue.

On Thanksgiving, the eatery — which has grown to three locations around the city — will again give out free bowls at its flagship location, this time to those in need.

Scheduled for 11 a.m-4 p.m. Nov. 24, Furious Spoon will serve free bowls of ramen to any individual or family in need that stops by its restaurant at 1571 N. Milwaukee Ave.

No proof of income will be required, and the ramen — a complimentary bowl of the guest's choice — will be served until it runs out, according to a flier and Facebook event page.

The restaurant, owned by chef Shin Thompson, is  "inviting community members who might not otherwise have food, companionship or a place to enjoy Thanksgiving to join them for a free meal," it announced in a news release.

Last year, about 50 bowls were served on Thanksgiving, Shin said.

“Holidays can be hard for those that have trouble putting food on the table. Everyone should be able to celebrate the holiday with a hot meal,” Thompson said.

Anshul Mangal, managing partner of Furious Spoon, added, "It’s all about the experience and giving back. No one should go hungry on Thanksgiving in our community."

Furious Spoon in Wicker Park will be closed to paying customers on Thanksgiving Day. Its two other locations, in Logan Square and Downtown's Revival Food Hall, will be closed for the holiday.
