Resurfacing Alleys, Replacing Curbs, Gutters Win In 35th Ward Budget Vote

LOGAN SQUARE — Alleys and curbs were the big winners in this year's 35th Ward participatory budget vote.

For the second year since being elected, Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa (35th) allowed voters to decide how to spend his discretionary budget, which amounts to a little more than $1 million.

Approximately 485 ballots were cast during the week-long voting process, from Oct. 17-21. Resurfacing alleys, as well as replacing curbs and gutters, came out on top, earning 391 votes. The projects will cost $446,500.

Resurfacing alleys:

• 2200 North Keeler/Tripp

• 4100 North Monticello/Lawndale

• 4200 North Ridgeway/Lawndale  

• 4400 North Central Park/Monticello

• 4400 North Kimball/Bernard

• 3600 West Montrose/Agatite

• 4400 North Bernard/St. Louis

Replacing concrete alley aprons:

• West Berteau at North Monticello

• West Montrose at North St. Louis

• West Bloomingdale at North Tripp

• West Sunnyside at North St. Louis

Replacing curbs and gutters:

• Cortland at Keystone along stretches of 2300 North Keeler

Improving pedestrian traffic safety came in second, earning 305 votes. The projects will cost $258,000.

• Neighborhood greenway on Wellington from Kedzie to Kimball

• Pedestrian refuge island to cross Kimball at Wellington

• Left-turn arrow installation at Milwaukee and Kimball

• Pedestrian countdown for Fullerton at Central Park

Installing lighting in Hermosa came in third, earning 264 votes. The projects will cost $390,000.

• Karlov from Armitage to Fullerton

• Tripp from Palmer to Belden
