NORWOOD PARK — Religious studies teacher Bradley Mulick knows the most important prayers are focused on things like world hunger and climate change. But they should also reflect people's deepest hopes and anxieties, he said.
And on Wednesday morning, all those feelings were anchored to the Chicago Cubs.
That's why the teacher at Resurrection College Prep High School, 7500 W. Talcott Ave., sat at his desk and wrote a long and elaborate prayer for his favorite team, then asked it to be read over the school's intercom.
"When you're trying to lead people in prayer, you want to be thinking where they're at right now, emotionally," Mulick said. "So it struck me that based on how preoccupied and anxious and excited everyone was, it would be a good time to say a prayer for the Cubs."
The benediction was so well received, administrators transcribed it and posted it to the school's Facebook page:
The post was shared more than 200 times and racked up thousands of views.
In a way, Mulick said, his prayer was ultimately answered. But not in the way he'd expected.
"I'm used to the understanding that God answers prayers, but not exactly in the way we anticipate," he said. "Sometimes God sends game-tying two-run homers in the eighth inning, but just like the 'Rolling Stones' song, at the end of the day you get what you need."
