LOGAN SQUARE — The neighborhood's first-ever Día de los Muertos — Day of the Dead — fest will bring traditional music, dance and remembrance to the busy intersection of Milwaukee, Diversey and Kimball avenues this weekend.

The six-day fest, put on by Northwest Arts Connection, kicks off at 5 p.m. Friday with live music. Local acts like Salcedo Group and Jazz Mex Trio will perform until 8 p.m.

Saturday will feature children's story time, poetry readings and an open mic from 4:30-8 p.m.; Sunday is an all-day affair from 1- 7 p.m. with cookie decorating, arts and crafts and traditional dance at Hairpin Arts Center, 3414 W. Diversey Ave.; Monday will feature live music and costumes at Crown Liquors, 2821 N. Milwaukee Ave., from 5:30-7 p.m.

The focus of the last two days — Tuesday and Wednesday — is remembrance. From 6:30-9 p.m, residents are invited to the bring pictures of their lost loved ones and candles to the plaza, where there will be an altar. Films will also be screened at Hairpin Arts Center both nights.

Día de los Muertos started in Mexico as a way to honor the dead. The holiday is traditionally celebrated on Nov. 1.
