COOK COUNTY CRIMINAL COURTHOUSE — A Woodlawn man used heroin and crack cocaine before fatally stabbing someone inside his apartment early Sunday, prosecutors said.

Jacob Shelton, 37, is charged with first-degree murder in the attack, which happened about 8:20 a.m. Sunday in the 6600 block of South Vernon Street.

According to authorities, Shelton spent Saturday night and early Sunday using crack cocaine and heroin with Lucius Delaney, 45, and Delaney's girlfriend.

Shelton left his apartment early Sunday to buy more drugs and got into a fight with Delaney upon his return, Assistant State's Attorney Holly Grosshans said during a bond hearing Tuesday. It's not clear why the men argued.

At one point, Delaney pinned Shelton to the ground and asked "if he was cool," Grosshans said. Delaney then released Shelton, and Shelton left the room.

Shelton soon returned with a knife and stabbed Delaney once in the chest, prosecutors said. Delaney tried to run away but fell to the ground, where he was stabbed once more in the right flank, according to Grosshans.

Delaney's girlfriend was able to grab Shelton's knife, run away and call 911, prosecutors said.

Paramedics found Delaney laying unresponsive on the floor of Shelton's apartment, according to Grosshans. Delaney was pronounced dead on the scene.

Cook County Judge James Brown on Tuesday ordered Shelton held in lieu of $2 million bail.
