HUMBOLDT PARK — Arguing that charter schools "steal resources" from neighborhood schools, activists are calling on Humboldt Park residents to vote no on a ballot referendum that would expand charter schools.

The activists are hosting a community meeting at San Lucas UCC Church, 2914 W. North Ave., at 11 a.m. Saturday, Following the meeting, starting at 12:30 p.m., activists will be knocking on doors to meet with neighbors.

“Even as a graduate from a charter school, I understand that the status quo allows for charter schools to steal resources from our neighborhood schools. We need to come together as a city and advocate for all students by voting NO to charter school expansion!,” said Jesus Ayala, graduate of a Noble Charter school, in a press release.

The non-binding referendum is on the Nov. 8 ballot.

The rally is organized by Grassroots Illinois Action Humboldt Park area. The group is also planning similar efforts in Rogers Park, Uptown, Pilsen, Albany Park and West Town.

According to the Sun-Times, charter schools in Chicago now educate about 55,000 of the 390,000 students in the Chicago Public Schools district.
