CHICAGO — Chicago has been voted the second best city to visit in the United States.

The city came second only to New York, but it passed up major hubs like New Orleans, Honolulu and Los Angeles (sort of like how the Cubs will hopefully beat the Dodgers) in Conde Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards. More than 159,000 people voted in the awards.

Chicago hotels also made a strong showing on the list, with the Virgin Hotel named the best hotel in the country (and No. 6 in the world), and the Thompson Hotel ranking 14th.

"When in doubt, take a boat tour of the city and float beneath some of the country’s tallest buildings; catch stand-up at, well, the Second City; or see if you can actually get a reservation at Alinea, a leader in molecular gastronomy," Traveler wrote of Chicago.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel has said he hopes to have 55 million annual tourist visits by 2020.
