LOGAN SQUARE — Police are looking for a man who groped a woman's buttocks on a residential Logan Square street and then ran off this week, police say.

Police said the incident happened at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Leticia, a Logan Square resident of 14 years who declined to provide her last name for safety reasons, was walking home in the 2600 block of West Altgeld Street when the man came up to her, "smacked" her buttocks and then ran off, according to police and the victim.

Leticia said she had noticed the man walking from afar, but didn't think anything of it until she heard jingling — which she believed was coming from keys or change in the man's pockets — getting faster and faster.

"All of a sudden, I feel a smack on my butt," she said. "It hurt. I was in shock, like 'Did that just happen?,'" she said.

She screamed at the man, which prompted a neighbor's dog to bark. The man then ran off while pulling up his pants, she said.

Leticia said it didn't occur to her until later that the jingling may have been the sound created from an unbuckled belt, which has made her feel even more uneasy.

"I walk alone by myself a lot," she said. "I noticed today that I started getting [uncomfortable] as I passed men ... I was like, 'This is not good.'"

This isn't the first time Leticia has been groped in Logan Square. She said a man groped her near Diversey Avenue about four years ago and she didn't say anything to anyone or file a police report.

"In a way, I'm proud of myself because before I stayed quiet and didn't do anything about it," she said.

Police describe the suspect as a Hispanic man with short black hair between 20 and 30 years of age, standing 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighing 130 pounds and wearing a red sweatshirt.

No one is in custody.
