BRIDGEPORT — How brazen do you have to be to rob a business across the street from the Deering District police station?

That’s what happened around 1 p.m. on Oct. 7, when two men wearing gloves and surgical masks walked into the Verizon Store at 747 W. 31st St. and robbed the place, according to Chicago Police.

The store is less than 500 feet from Deering District headquarters, 3120 S. Halsted St., where more than 300 officers show up for duty every day.

Though the men were unarmed, they demanded employees open the store’s safe, according to a police report — but the store did not have a safe.

The robbers instead got away with 17 cell phones.

The store turned over surveillance video to police, and employees told detectives they recognized one of the robbers as a customer from the day before.

Police describe the robbers as two men, standing about 6 feet tall and weighing 160 pounds.

Anyone with information about this crime can reach out to Deering District detectives at 312-747-8382.
