Ravenswood Manor Shooting Wounds 'Former Latin King' Early Monday: Police

CHICAGO — A 32-year-old man was wounded after being shot in Ravenswood Manor early Monday, police said.

The man was in the 2900 block of West Montrose Avenue when shots rang out at around 5:30 a.m., said Officer Bari Lemmon, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

He was struck in the right side of his head and his right bicep and managed to get himself to Swedish Covenant Hospital where his condition wasn't released, but he is listed as "stable," Lemmon said.

Cmdr. Elias Voulgaris said the victim identified himself as a "former Latin King" and lives in the 2300 block of South Sawyer Avenue.

"We don't know why he was up this way," the commander said.

Police only have a vague description of the shooter: a male, white Hispanic, 25 to 35 years old.

Voulgaris said he would assign an extra patrol car to the area in which the shooting occurred.

Neighbors posting to Facebook reported hearing yelling, crying and a car pulling away at the time of the shooting.

A recent spate of violence in the area, including shots fired in broad daylight near Bateman Elementary, prompted a community safety walk last week.

"This is just not acceptable," said Misha Mann, a member of The Residents of Irving Park civic organization.
